Celebrating All Mothers

My favorite picture of us

Amazing women surround me. I am so impressed by the women who make up my circle. They enrich my life, lift me up, celebrate the wins, and encourage me through the losses. I have women who have become mother figures to me, who have become amazing sisters, and who I now consider family. These women are there for my bean and act as aunts, grandmothers, and confidants. I am blessed to have all these amazing women in my life.

When I celebrate Mother’s Day, I celebrate the women who make up my circle. Not all of these women are traditional mothers. Some are amazing moms to babies with fur and four legs. Their role is not diminished because they don’t have human children. These women display just as much nurturing, care, love, and concern as any traditional mother. The role of a mother is to protect those who need protection. The animals in this world are the true innocents, the genuinely helpless, and need someone to stand up for them. I admire the women who step up and care for all creatures.

I also celebrate the women who improve my life. I have friends who have stepped into the role of mother and go out of their way to make me feel included, supported, and loved. These women are my go-to’s. When I have great news to share, they are the ones I call. When I am low and feel overwhelmed, they are the ones who call me. I have learned that family is not blood. Family is love. Family is supporting and uplifting. Family doesn’t have to be manipulated, dysfunctional, and unkind. Family can be love, support, kindness, and caring without any strings attached. It is those women that I celebrate.

I celebrate the women who open their hearts to children born of another mother. I am in this circle. I didn’t have to grow my bean or deliver her for her to be mine. I knew that the moment I met her birth mother, she was my child. The Universe has a plan, and sometimes everything aligns, and the plan is crystal clear. That was my experience with my bean. My role and the women like me are mother’s in the truest sense of the word. And on that note, I celebrate the selfless women who understand it is not their time to be a mother. The women are filled with love and responsibility to find the perfect mother for the child they bring into the world. I celebrate these women too.

On Mother’s Day, I celebrate the amazing girl who made me a mom. Out of all the women in the world, she picked me, and I am blessed. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank the powers that be for the opportunity to mother this amazing little girl, who isn’t so little anymore. I celebrate the young woman she is becoming and the woman she will someday be, which will be sooner than I think. My cup runneth over.

On this celebratory weekend, I hope you recognize and celebrate all the amazing women in your world. Regardless of how they became or whom they mother, they bring nurturing, love, care, happiness, and light to your world. Stay safe, be smart, celebrate all the mothers in your world, and keep washing your hands.
