Homemade Big Macs

Happy Friday, dear reader. This week’s recipe was chosen by my bib overall wearing wonder buns. The Bibbed Wonder loves a good burger. To be honest, he loves a not-so-good burger. If it’s a burger, he’s happy. Like many of us, The Bibbed Wonder enjoys a Big Mac from our favored fast food restaurant. I have never tackled a Big Mac on my own. The calorie count has always been enough to scare me away. However, The Bibbed Wonder and The Bean occasionally enjoy a Big Mac.

I try to make my two processed food-loving buddies their favorite fast food foods at home. The homemade versions are free from preservatives, bad fats, and excess sodium. The homemade versions are healthier than the fast food version, but they’re not exactly what I call healthy eating. However, if one is eating a burger, one is not necessarily interested in a healthful diet.

For The Bean, the secret is in the sauce. My kid is one of the most cautious, fussy eaters I have met, but she loves a burger with Big Mac sauce. The Bibbed Wonder loves it all. The recipe I will share with you today was given to the bean by a dear friend and the grandma of one of Jordan’s besties. Tina Gribshaw is the reason we enjoy “Big Macs” at home. According to Jordan, everything Tina makes is fantastic. The Smay family definitely enjoys this recipe; thank you, Tina.

Homemade Big Macs

Ingredients For The Burgers:

Sesame Seed Buns

2 lbs. Extra Lean Burger

Salt

Pepper

American Cheese or Cheddar Cheese

Finely Chopped Lettuce

Dill Pickle Slices

Tomato

Ingredients For Big Mac Sauce:

3/4 Cup Mayonnaise

2 Tablespoon Yellow Mustard

2 Tablespoons Sweet Pickle Relish

2 Teaspoons Granulated Sugar

1/2 Teaspoon White Vinegar

1/2 Teaspoon Sweet Paprika

1/4 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder

Directions:

Using a burger press, press extra lean burger into patties. Fry or grill burgers until well done.

Top each burger with cheese.

Assemble burgers to your liking. (The Bibbed Wonder likes to use two burger patties for the optimal burger experience)

In a separate bowl, combine all the ingredients for the Big Mac sauce. Stir well.

Top each burger with Big Mac sauce and enjoy.

Homemade Big Macs have become one of our favorite meals. To balance the meal, I serve a spinach or kale salad on the side with roasted root vegetables instead of French fries or chips. However, sometimes nothing is more delicious than a side of fries with a good burger. Either way, its delicious. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. Stay safe, be smart, enjoy healthier versions of your favorite foods, and keep washing your hands.
