This week, dear reader, the spotlight is on our deliciously scented Sweet Anjou Pear soap and moisturizer. When I discovered this clean, safe, pear-scented fragrance, I knew I had to have it and create a soap and moisturizer inspired by our lone pear tree, which stands in the field above the house. There are so many stories from my dad's childhood surrounding this old tree. Most notably, it is the story about my dad and his brothers shooting a beehive with a .22 rifle.
A large bee's nest hung heavy from the branches of the pear tree. My dad, then probably no more than ten years old, decided that shooting the bees' nest with a .22 rifle would be fun and a great way to disperse the bees. Now, mind you, it is probably the late 1950s or early 1960s, and things were a lot different regarding what activities were acceptable entertainment for children. As the boys sat in the yard, aiming at the bees' nest, they turned it into a contest to see who could hit the target most frequently and accurately, creating a barrage of bullets.
There is a small mining town located southwest of the farm. By way the crow flies (and bullets, apparently), the town is less than a mile from the farm. One would not think that .22 bullets shot from the yard would reach anywhere near the town of Ernest. However, a housewife from Ernest heard pinging noises coming from outside. It was as if something were hitting her aluminum siding and bouncing off the house. She went outside to investigate and was stung on the backside by a .22 bullet. No damage was done to the woman other than a sharp sting on her backside, and minimal damage was done to the house; mere tiny dents where the bullets hit. However, the story has turned into farm folklore and always made for a good laugh around the dinner table during the holidays.
My dad would tell the story, laughing and slapping his leg the way he used to when he found something exceptionally funny. The story always ended with him stating, "The size of that woman's a$$ made the perfect target! It would be a hard one to miss!" Needless to say, the boys were no longer permitted to shoot in the southwest direction. I would not have believed it, but more than one neighbor and resident of Ernest have shared the story almost word for word. Out of caution, guns are never shot in the southwest direction for fear of hitting a home in Ernest.
Sweet Anjou Pear is just one of many scents inspired by our life on the farm. This wonderfully warm, fruity, sweet scent reminds me of our lovely pear tree standing alone and stoically in the field. Each year, it produces an abundance of pears. When they warm in the autumn sunshine, the heady scent is delightful. Our soap is a perfect representation of this lovely scent.
This week, exclusively on the website, save 25% on Sweet Anjou Pear soap and moisturizer. No promo code is ever needed to save on the weekly special; the discount will be applied at checkout. On this seasonal summer day, stay safe, be smart, and be careful when shooting guns. Hold onto the stories and smile when sharing them, and keep washing your hands.
